SHLOMO BEN AMI AT OCTOBER AWARDS:

AN UNSAVOURY INVITATION
Col·lectiu Palestina Resisteix press release on Oct. 21st, '05

Col·lectiu Palestina Resisteix (Garraf) wishes to contribute the following to the protests against Shlomo Ben Ami’s attendance to the October Culture Awards ceremony at València University on October 28th organised by Fundació Ausiàs March and Editorial 3i4.

Shlomo Ben Ami owes his international prestige to his former position as Israeli Embassador in Madrid, his diplomatic stature acquired through his term as Minister of Foreign Affairs and prominent role in the so called “Peace Process” and his scholarly excellence.

Once again though, there is more to the picture than meets the eyes.

Ben Ami has never stopped blaming the fallthrough of the peace process on the Palestinians who in turn felt abused at the hollowness of the Israeli promises while assisting at the building up of twice as much settlements on the West Bank as facts on the ground.

Shlomo Ben Ami is reputed to be a moderate dove as opposed to hardline hawks such as Sharon or Netanyahu. Now it is time to wonder seriously if they are not two faces of the same coin: hawks’ conquests by brute force followed by dovish diplomacy selling them to the world community.

In an interview to Spanish newspapers El Mundo on 10/05/02 he wished that the Palestinian economy would develop itself. Meanwhile the Israeli army was engaged in the wholesale erasing of fields and groves, destroying houses, facilities and workshops in a clear attempt to turn the Palestinian towns and cities into impoverished captive markets and reservations of cheap labour entirely dependent on the Israeli economy.

He also gave greenlight to war criminal Ariel Sharon’s visit with 1,000 armed men escort to the Al Aqsa mosque compound on 25/09/’00, a clear deliberate provocation which triggered the onset of the 2nd Intifadah while he could have prevented this to happen in his capacity as Minister of Public Security.

Palestina Resisteix! calls upon Acció Cultural del País Valencià grassroots to reflect upon the following matters:

What is the point of having zionism - the ideology behind the creation and expansion of a Jewish supremacist state at the expense of the native Arab Palestinian people - as a guest in a foremost social event of our Catalan culture? It is not cooperation but international pressure against Israel that will help towards a fair settlement.

Has the Acció Cultural leadership informed the local chapters of such a compromising decision? We now beseech them to do whatever it is in their power to get the invitation to Shlomo Ben Ami to be cancelled.

The absolute need for the Catalan citizenry and institutions to educate themselves on the conflict in Palestine. In this we contribute our website www.palestinaresisteix.org and more specifically we suggest the October Awards organisers and Acció Cultural’s local chapters to invite us to talk about what we witness during our trips to Palestine and inform about the roots and present development of the conflict.
